Our History
Founded in 1924, Barkly East High School has been a cornerstone of education in the Joe Gqabi District for over a century. Its roots go back to 1888, when the town’s first public school opened in De Villiers Street, later serving as the NGK Mission Church.
Through the years, the school expanded to include a boarding department (1917–1959), welcoming learners from rural areas. Today, it continues to provide Afrikaans-medium secondary education (Grades 8–12), guided by its vision: “Inspire hope, build trust, and promote wellness.”
Generations of learners have grown here in knowledge and character, making Barkly East High School a proud symbol of resilience, discipline, and community spirit.
